COACH
Am I Ready to Retire?
How It Works
Every individual has a different goal for retirement. This Coach guides you through setting a personal retirement goal and predicts your total retirement savings. It then evaluates whether you’re on track to meet your goal.
The Big Question – Should I Retire?
You may be at the age where you often think: Is it time to retire? You’re past all the milestones, and now you’re looking at your years of hard work and wondering if that hard work should finally come to a close. So, how do you know if retirement is the right move right now? It boils down to looking closely at your finances and what retirement means for your daily life and those critical retirement choices.
Beyond the crucial financial implications of retiring, there are other post-career life transitions to consider:
- Emotional and Psychological Well-Being: The Heart of Retirement. Retirement marks a significant life shift, particularly for those who’ve dedicated their lives to working. For many, their career is deeply intertwined with their identity, making retirement feel like a monumental change. It’s understandable to feel a sense of loss. Your emotional and psychological well being truly matters as you contemplate whether or not it’s time to retire. If you cherish your work and wish to continue as long as possible, that choice is yours. But it pays to think critically about how you may feel after you submit that resignation.
- Physical Health: Consider how you want to spend your time. Wish you had the energy for that hobby you’ve put aside, as work always takes precedence? If you’re financially ready for retirement, perhaps it’s time to reclaim that passion. As you consider this pivotal step, your current health and anticipated healthcare needs are essential factors to evaluate.
- Retirement and Your Loved Ones: Navigating Relationship Shifts. Retirement is a significant shift that can ripple outward. Your relationships with your spouse, family, and friends might look different in this new chapter. It’s wise to consider how these connections could change and to think about how you want to actively maintain healthy and meaningful relationships with everyone you love after retirement.
Decoding the Signals: How Do I Know When to Retire?
The primary factor in determining your retirement timeline is a thorough financial assessment. The Coach mentioned earlier guides you through this process, helping you understand if you are ready to retire. Here are key financial aspects to consider:
- Current Savings and Investments: Evaluate whether your accumulated savings and investments are sufficient to maintain you and your family’s current lifestyle throughout retirement. This is a crucial step in determining if it’s the right time to retire.
- Future Expenses and Needs: Consider any anticipated expenses or life changes that could impact your financial situation and cost of living. Ensure your retirement savings adequately accounts for these potential shifts.
- Potential Healthcare Costs: A key element in figuring out if you can retire is thinking through future healthcare expenses and how that factors into different government assistance programs.
The Tipping Point: Recognizing Your Time to Retire
With the above in mind, take a moment for self-reflection. What are the key signs that suggest retirement aligns with your current situation? Conversely, what indicators suggest it might not be the right time to retire? Consider these questions across financial, lifestyle, and emotional aspects as you ponder the question, “should I retire?” After this evaluation, and with the support of the “Am I Ready to Retire?” Coach, you’ll be better equipped to determine if now is the right time to retire for you.
Charting the Course: What to Do After Retirement
As you chart your course into retirement, remember it’s a journey rich with possibilities extending far beyond financial considerations. This new chapter offers the exciting freedom to pursue new and existing hobbies, embark on adventures to new places, or even contribute meaningfully through volunteering. Thinking about what to do after retirement is a key part of this stage.

Your personal checks include both our routing number and your account number, as shown on the Grow check example below.
